COMMON SENSE (the basic level of practical knowledge and judgment that we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way)
- When crossing the road, use some common sense and look both ways. And run fast if crossing MKAD.😏
COMMON DECENCY/COURTESY (the basic level of politeness that you expect from someone)
- In England, it's common decency/courtesy to ask "how are you?" and not mean it.🙆
COMMON KNOWLEDGE (a fact that everyone knows)
- Oh come on, it's common knowledge that the capital of America is New York!🍻
COMMON GROUND (shared interests, beliefs, or opinions between two people or groups of people who disagree about most other subjects)
- I think Britain and the EU-SSR will never find any common ground during Brexit negotiations. They disagree on everything.
(1) COMMON CAUSE (to unite one's interest with another)
- It doesn't matter if you're Russian or British. We both despise the EU and therefore share a common cause. Let's fight side by side and bring the establishment down!
(2) COMMON CAUSE (as a frequent result of something)
- Poor dental hygiene was a common cause of death in the middle ages.
COMMON PRACTICE (something that is done a lot and is considered normal)
- In Scotland, it's common practice to deep-fry haggis and eat it with a mountain of chips. 🍟
AS COMMON AS MUCK (an impolite way of describing someone who is from a low social class )
- You can tell from the way she talks she's as common as muck.
THE LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR (the most basic, least sophisticated level of taste, sensibility, or opinion among a group of people)
- TV in Britain nowadays seems to be aimed at the lowest common denominator. No wonder Britain is screwed up!
A COMMONER (in the UK, a person who is not born into a position of high social rank - a bit rude as if you are talking down to someone)
- It is now accepted that a member of the royal family can marry a commoner.
