10 of our favorite romantic English readers


    It’s the beginning of February and love is in the air! St. Valentine’s Day will soon be here and soon we will be surrounded by red roses, boxes of chocolates and mountains of love letters.

    To celebrate the occasion, and to get your students talking about romance and relationships, here are ten of our favorite romantic Pearson English Readers for Levels 1–6!

    11. Girl Meets Boy – Level 1
    This classic tale by Derek Strange follows the romantic story of a girl who travels to Spain on a boat and meets a handsome young man. After falling in love with his smile, she wants to see him again, but things aren’t that easy!

    Girl Meets Boy is a great, easy-to-follow story for lower-level language learners, and a fun lead into to St. Valentine’s Day activities.

    22. Mike’s Lucky Day – Level 1
    Leslie Dunkling’s story follows Mike, an assistant van driver, after he meets a girl called Jennifer. It all seems to be going well when she agrees to go to the cinema with him, but he arrives late and she’s upset.

    33. Persuasion – Level 2
    This classic romance, adapted from a Jane Austen novel, tells the story of Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth, who fall in love very young, but never marry. After meeting many years later, Anne wonders whether Captain Wentworth still feels the same way, or whether he is more interested in her friends.

    44. Romeo and Juliet – Level 3
    What list of romantic readers would be complete without Romeo and Juliet, the most famous love story ever told?

    Adapted from William Shakespeare’s play, this tragic story follows the love of Romeo and Juliet, a young couple from two rival families.

    55. Notting Hill – Level 3
    For something a little lighter, check out one of our favorite comedies from British writer and director, Richard Curtis. Adapted from the original film, Notting Hill is about famous American film star Anna Scott.

    Anna is looking for love and, after meeting William Thacker, the owner of a small bookshop in London, her life will never be the same again.

    66. Evening Class – Level 4
    Maeve Binchy’s book Evening Class might be familiar to your students – it’s about thirty people who join an Italian evening class.

    This Level 4 story explores the lives of different characters, including Aidan and Signora, who run the classes, Connie who wants to get away from home, and Lou who shouldn’t be trusted!

    77. The Phantom of the Opera – Level 5
    Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera is a classic Parisian tale of secrets and intrigue at the opera house. After the disappearance of a young woman – a gifted singer – people are afraid she has been taken by a man, maybe a monster, or even…a ghost!

    This scary, but romantic tale will have your Level 5 Students on the edge of their seats!

    88. A Tale of Two Cities – Level 5
    Charles Dickens’ gripping story takes place during the French Revolution, when a Frenchman and Englishman fall in love with the same woman. They must survive dangerous situations and do what they must in the name of true love.

    Your Level 5 students will love the romance and atmosphere of this challenging novel adaptation.

    99. Captain Corelli’s Mandolin – Level 6
    Your students may already know this classic tale, which was adapted for a Hollywood movie with Nicholas Cage. Louis De Bernieres’ love story takes place during World War 2, in 1941.

    Captain Corelli, an Italian officers meets Pelagia a girl from Greece. He falls in love with her, but she is already engaged to be married with a soldier in the Italian army.

    110. North and South – Level 6
    This story by Elizabeth Gaskell is about a young woman called Margaret Hale who moves with her parents to an industrial city in the north of England. She meets a rich mill owner named Mr Thornton, and though she dislikes him, he falls in love with her.
